Taken from a 1901 Supplement to The (Illiopolis) State Center Record
J. B. Higginson, Proprietor State Center Record
J. B. Higginson
The owner and manager of the STATE CENTER RECORD, to whose enterprise and hustling ability is due the success of Illustrated Illiopolis, has resided in this community for the past eight years. His experience in the management of a newspaper enterprise dates from March 1, 1900, when lie purchased the SANGAMON Co. RECORD from Chas. M. Buckles. and in September 1900, bought out the Illinois State Center and consolidated both papers under the name of the STATE CENTER RECORD, as now issued weekly. Mr. Higginson has been employed as teacher in the public schools ever since he settled in Illiopolis, and is now in charge of the Grammar department. Between the school and the newspaper office, he is kept constantly occupied, but is abundantly resourceful in energy, ambition and industry to discharge promptly and efficiently all imposed duties. He has from boyhood imbibed republican doctrine and since his majority has been an untiring worker in the interests of the party. Mr. Higginson’s purpose is to make the STATE CENTER RECORD a bright and interesting newspaper, free from political bias and disagreeable personalities; a home paper to be read at the fireside. giving incidents of local interest and important events in county, state and national affairs.
